BioMe Rainwater Treatment for Water Butts and Tanks 500 g

BioMe Rainwater Treatment for Water Butts and Tanks 500 g

Treatment for rainwater in water butts and above- or below-ground tanks. Aluminium sulphate clears cloudy water, and Bacillus bacteria break down the sediment on the bottom.

  • Clear water: the sediment settles in 48–72 hours
  • No chlorine: the water stays fine for watering the garden
  • Simple: 20 g per 100 l, once a month

BioMe Rainwater Treatment

Green, cloudy rainwater? It will clear.

Granules with aluminium sulphate and Bacillus bacteria for water butts and rainwater tanks, above or below ground. The aluminium sulphate gathers particles into flakes that settle on the bottom, and the bacteria break down the sediment. No chlorine.

Green, cloudy water that smells rotten

Water from the roof carries pollen, dust, leaves, bird droppings and microorganisms into the tank. On warm days, all of it becomes food for algae and putrefying bacteria.

  • The water has a green tinge and is cloudy
  • The tank smells unpleasant, especially in summer
  • Sticky sludge builds up on the bottom
  • Garden hose nozzles keep clogging

Chlorine is toxic to plants and hard to dose without a tester. If you just leave the water to stand, the sediment stays and the smell doesn’t go away.

How it works

Chemistry gathers, biology breaks down

  • Sprinkle the granules

Spread them evenly over the whole water surface, not in one spot.

  • Particles settle

Aluminium sulphate binds particles into heavy flakes that sink. The water clears.

  • Bacteria work below

Bacillus and enzymes break down organic sediment, so sludge and smell stop growing.

Dosage

Just one figure to remember: 20 g per 100 l

Monthly

Dose
20 g (¾ scoop) per 100 l
How often
once a month
Water ready
after 48–72 h (underground: up to 96 h)

After heavy rain

When
the volume of water rises sharply
Rule
add the dose for the new water
Example
+200 l = +40 g

A 1,000 l tank needs about 200 g. Draw water from above the sediment, from the top of the tank, without stirring up the layer on the bottom. The bacteria work best in water above 12–15°C, so use the product mainly in the warmer months (in Europe, from April to October).

The granules are dangerous to the eyes. Wear gloves and safety glasses when sprinkling and avoid raising dust. Don’t combine with chlorine or algaecides: if you’ve chlorinated the water, wait at least 48 hours and rinse the tank with clean water.

To be honest

What this product won’t do

  • It won’t make the water drinkable

The water isn’t fit for drinking, cooking or washing vegetables eaten raw. It doesn’t disinfect the water or remove heavy metals.

  • It isn’t for fish ponds

Aluminium sulphate is toxic to aquatic life. Use it only in rainwater tanks with no fish or plants.

  • It won’t remove all algae

It slows their growth, but it isn’t an algaecide.

FAQ

What our customers ask

What can I use the water for?

Watering the lawn, ornamental plants and shrubs, washing the patio, driveway and car, and flushing the toilet. Not for drinking, cooking or preparing food.

Can I water vegetables with it?

Yes, with water drawn from above the sediment. For pH-sensitive plants such as onions and cabbage, check the soil acidity first: aluminium sulphate makes it slightly more acidic. Hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons and blueberries, which love acid soil, tolerate it well.

How long does a tub last?

It depends on the tank. At 20 g per 100 l: a 200 l water butt takes 40 g a month, so a tub lasts over a year; a 500 l tank takes 100 g a month, so 5 months; a 1,000 l tank takes 200 g a month, so 2.5 months.

Can I use the product in winter?

In winter, in very cold water, the biological effect is much weaker. Settling still works at low temperatures, but the overall result is weaker. We recommend regular use in the warmer months (in Europe, from April to October).

The water smells after application. Is that normal?

Yes. For the first 2–3 days there may be a fermentation smell while the bacteria activate and start working on the sediment. It passes on its own.

Does it help against mosquitoes?

It helps, but it isn’t a dedicated product. Clearer water means less food for larvae. You’ll get the best effect combined with a tight-fitting lid on the tank.

CLP classification and precautions

Danger. H318: causes serious eye damage. Wear protective gloves and eye and face protection. Avoid breathing in the dust. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wash your hands after use. In concentrated form, aluminium sulphate is toxic to aquatic life: don’t dispose of leftovers in rivers, lakes or drains; take them to a hazardous waste collection point.

First aid
  • Eyes: rinse with plenty of water for at least 30 minutes, including under the eyelids. Remove contact lenses, don’t rub the eyes and contact a doctor immediately.
  • Skin: remove contaminated clothing and rinse the skin with plenty of water. If irritation persists, see a doctor.
  • Swallowing: rinse mouth with water, do not induce vomiting, contact a doctor immediately and show them the pack. Emergency number: 112 in the EU, or your local emergency number.
