Questions about BioMe products, answered
The questions end users ask most often about dosing, results and safety. Useful for your customers and your sales team. For trade enquiries, see the Wholesale and B2B page.
Septic tanks
Which product is right for a septic tank?
There are two options. BioMe Septic Tank Balance comes as granules: 20 g a week for a tank of up to 10 m³. SeptiGo Tablets need no measuring: one tablet a week for a 2–3 m³ tank and 3–4 people.
Does the septic tank lid need to be opened?
No. Pour the dose or drop the tablet into the toilet and flush. The granules and tablets dissolve and make their own way to the tank. It’s best to dose in the evening, when the flow is low.
When do the first results show?
The smell usually eases in the first few weeks. The surface crust and sludge reduce with regular use, within 6–8 weeks. The bacteria need time to build a stable population.
Will the tank need desludging less often?
The bacteria liquefy organic sludge, so the tank fills more slowly. To be honest: sand and mineral deposits remain, so desludging won’t disappear completely. Regular emptying and maintenance are still part of looking after a septic tank.
What weakens the bacteria in a septic tank?
Chlorine, bleach, caustic soda and chemical unblockers, antibiotics, condensate from a condensing boiler and salt from water softeners. A lot of water at once, for example when there are visitors, can also wash the bacteria out. In these situations, use the intensive dose: 40 g a week for 2–3 weeks.
Does it work in winter?
Yes. At low temperatures the bacteria work more slowly, but dosing shouldn’t stop. Regular doses keep the bacterial population going, so the system isn’t starting from scratch in spring. For a holiday home, start the season with the intensive dose.
Treatment plants
Which types of treatment plant do the products work in?
BioMe Wastewater Solution and SeptiGo Tablets work in aerobic systems (aerated, including SBR) as well as in anaerobic systems with a drainage field. For aerated plants there is also BioMe SBR Booster, dosed straight into the aeration chamber.
How is BioMe Wastewater Solution dosed?
20 g a week for a system of about 3 m³ and 3–4 people. 40 g a week for 5–6 m³ and 5–7 people. On first use or after a long break, use 40 g a week for 2–3 weeks, then the standard dose.
Someone in the house has been on antibiotics. What then?
Antibiotics end up in the system and weaken the bacteria. During the course of treatment, use a double dose of BioMe Wastewater Solution (40 g a week) for 3–4 weeks.
Can boiler condensate go into the system?
It isn’t recommended. Condensate from a condensing boiler is very acidic and kills bacteria. If it has already got into the system, use a higher dose for a while.
The drainage field is blocked. Will bacteria help?
A fully blocked drainage field needs mechanical cleaning or a specialist. Bacteria won’t fix mechanical faults either, such as a broken blower. Used regularly, they reduce the sludge and fat crust in the system. For early clogging, there are dedicated regenerators for drainage fields, soakaways and infiltration tunnels.
Why does it sometimes take a while to work?
The bacteria already living in the system can slow down new strains at first. The effect shows after a few days or a few weeks, once the bacteria have adapted. Keep dosing regularly.
Pipes and drains
Kitchen or bathroom: which product?
For grease and food scraps in the kitchen sink, BioMe Drain Easer or BioMe Kitchen Drain Unblocker. For the shower, bath or washbasin, where hair sticks to soap and sebum, BioMe Bathroom Drain Unblocker.
Will it clear a fully blocked pipe?
No. If water doesn’t drain at all or something has fallen into the pipe, clear it mechanically first. Then use BioMe on the crust that’s left and for prevention.
How is it applied?
In the evening, straight into the drain. Rinse through with warm water at 30–40°C, not boiling: above 60°C the bacteria die. Don’t use the drain for a few hours, ideally all night (6–12 hours for Drain Easer, at least 8 hours for the kitchen and bathroom unblockers).
A chemical unblocker has been used. When can BioMe go in?
After at least 24 hours and a good rinse with warm water. Any chemical residue would kill the bacteria in the product. Don’t combine BioMe with chlorine, bleach or chemical unblockers.
Is it safe for pipes?
Yes. The products won’t corrode PVC, PE, PP, copper or cast iron pipes and won’t damage seals. BioMe Drain Easer has a pH of 5–8 and BioMe Bathroom Drain Unblocker a pH of 4–7.
Is it safe for septic tanks?
Yes. Unlike chemical unblockers, BioMe doesn’t kill the bacteria in a septic tank or treatment plant; it supports them.
About the products
Who makes BioMe products?
EcoBen (ECOBEN BIOTECH sp. z o.o.), a Polish manufacturer. The formulas are developed from our own laboratory research and made in Paniówki, Silesia.
What do the products contain?
Non-pathogenic bacteria, mainly Bacillus strains with GRAS status, and enzymes for fats, proteins, starch and fibre. The septic tank and drain products contain no caustic soda, no acids and no chlorine. The full composition is in each product description and in the safety data sheet.
Are they safe around children and pets?
The bacteria are non-pathogenic, and most BioMe products are not classified as hazardous under CLP. Check the safety information for each product. As with any household product, keep them out of reach of children and pets.
How should the products be stored?
In the closed pack, somewhere cool and dry (up to 25°C), away from moisture, heat sources and food. Damp activates the bacteria inside the pack too early.
Is a safety data sheet available?
Yes. There is a safety data sheet (SDS) for every product. Business partners receive the documents with the offer; you can also request them through the contact form.
Which product fits a specific problem?
Describe the system (septic tank, aerated treatment plant or one with a drainage field, pipes), the size of the tank, the number of people in the house, the problem and the products used so far. With that, we can recommend a product without follow-up questions.
